Introduction by David Sylvester and with Essays by William Feaver, Flash Allen and Corinna MacNeice. Edited by Chili Hawes.         Copyright © 1988, October Gallery Trust

Published by Synergetic Press, Inc. in conjunction with the October Gallery.

This book is a retrospective catalogue with 20 colour plates and a further 20 black & white reproductions and photographs dealing with the life and work of Gerald Wilde.Wilde is today  considered a unique painter in his having been one of a very small number of British artists to explore and develop to a consistently high level an abstract expressionist style. The October Gallery opened in 1979 with an exhibition of Wilde's work, and over the following years became the artist's representative and chief means of support. In 1986 the Gallery published this first book to treat exclusively of Wilde's haunting pictures, and, sadly, though much involved in the project, the artist himself died just prior to the book's completion. He has gradually come to be recognised as an important contributor to the development of British art in the twentieth century - and besides the extensive collection of his work held at the October Gallery his paintings are to found in the collections of The Tate Gallery, The Arts Council of England and other major museums around the country. A major retrospective of Wilde's work will form part of the October Gallery's exhibition programme in 2000,   to mark the new millennium.
