The arrival of the R/V Heraclitus in San Juan, Puerto Rico on 15th February, 1982 marked the successful completion of the previous Amazon Expedition. The seasoned Heraclitus crew, had then to choose where next to travel, and decided to attempt another 'first' for the ship, a voyage to circumnavigate the world. The crew spent the next year making all the preparations necessary for such an extended voyage. Eventually, the R/V Heraclitus set sail west from San Juan on February 15th, 1983, heading for the Panama Canal, and then continued on the long voyage across the Pacific Ocean. In the course of this expedition, the ship sailed over 25,000 miles, and called at 40 ports in 25 countries.
