The
Gallery:
The main exhibition space of the Gallery is on the ground floor of an elegant three-storey Victorian building designed by the architect Toulon in 1863. The Gallery has been many things in its time besides, most recently, a Girls' primary school. In the Seventies, having fallen into disrepair, the freehold was purchased and the whole building refurbished by an international group of artists and poets who designed it to be a new kind of art gallery, one that would show the finest contemporary work of all cultures around the planet.
The Courtyard:
The L-shaped building protects an inner central courtyard from the surrounding noise and bustle of London's crowded streets. Inside, there is a large open-air courtyard garden of flowers, shrubs and fruit-trees. When the weather is fine the courtyard serves as an outdoor extension to the October Gallery .
The
Theatre:
The Theatre, located on the second floor, is a large, naturally lit room with wooden flooring, excellent acoustics, professional stage-lighting and a Bechstein Grand Piano. It is most frequently rented for a variety of dance and theatreperformances, for music concerts and for auditions.
The
Club Room:
Adjoining the Theatre is a quiet, spacious room lined with an impressive collection of books covering a broad range of subjects dealing with the Arts, Science and travel. The room is furnished with Oriental carpets, dark leather arm-chairs, and a full-sized conference table, the whole being beautifully lit by original stained glass windows.
The
October Gallery Café:
A warm welcoming space where visitors can enjoy a coffee, tea and other light refreshments in a relaxed atmosphere Tuesday to Friday between 12:30 and 2:00 pm. A daily menu of delicious home-made food of various regional cuisines is served each day that the café is open (including at least one vegetarian dish per day) for an average of about £5.00 per person. During the Summer months café patrons are able to take their meals and refreshments outside in the adjoining courtyard.
