Edouard Duval Carrie - Le nouveau familier

HAITI - PHOTOS PAINTINGS IRONWORKS
           27th April - 17th June, 1995

An exhibition that combined photographic images of Haiti with the powerful paintings and metalwork sculptures of Haitian artists Edouard Duval-Carrié, Frantz Lamothe, Stevenson Magloire, Prosper Pierre-Louis, Julio Balan, Chantal Regnault, Maggie Steber, Les Stone & Roger Hutchings.

CONTEMPORARY ART FROM PAKISTAN
22nd June - 29th July, 1995

An exhibition that combined the music-inspired paperworks of Sabah Husain with a major installation based on the popular art-form of "truck painting," and   including the work of London-based artist Ali Zaidi. The exhibition was staged in collaboration with Music Village and was accompanied by a series of musical events.

  EL ANATSUI - WEST AFRICA
           14th September - 28th October, 1995

El Anatsui's unconventional tool, the powersaw, and his use of fire to scorch and shape wood marks him as one of Africa's most innovative of contemporary artists. Considered as one of the most important sculptors of his generation this exhibition of his reliefs, sculptures and installations was his first solo show in the UK.

FANTE FLAGS
14th September - 28th October, 1995

An exhibition of Fanté flags from Ghana, from the collection of Peter Adler. These flags, used by battalions of Fanté soldiers, borrowed much of their imagery from the symbols found on the ensigns of Colonial British battalions yet still retain sources of inspiration and execution that are uniquely African.

  AFRICA - A CELEBRATION OF RITUAL
           4th October - 28th October, 1995

Concurrent with the above exhibitions, an exhibition of photographs by Carol Beckwith and Angela Fisher celebrating the astounding diversity of ritual across the entire continent of Africa.  African Ceremonies, an amazing work, as important in anthropological as in photographic terms, containing the results of more than ten years of work in Africa has just been published by Abrams Inc.

ABLADE GLOVER - GHANA
2nd November - 2nd December 1995

The renowned Ghanaian painter and teacher, and the Founding Director of the impressive Artists Alliance Gallery in Accra, Ghana, presented a new series of his thickly impastoed and vibrant oil paintings showing scenes of life in Ghana intensely alive with colour and movement.
